Safest Countries in the World โ€” 2026 Rankings

210 countries ranked by composite safety score. Each score combines the U.S. State Department travel advisory level, World Bank governance indicators, traveler impact severity data, and Freedom House civil liberties ratings into a single 0-100 metric. Higher scores mean safer conditions for travelers.

โ–ถ How we calculate these rankings

The composite safety score weights four data sources: Advisory Level (40%) from the U.S. Department of State, converted to a 0-100 scale where Level 1 = 100 and Level 4 = 0. Political Stability (25%) from the World Bank Worldwide Governance Indicators, using the political stability percentile. Traveler Impact (25%) from our severity assessment covering crime, terrorism, and kidnapping risk, inverted so lower severity means higher safety. Freedom (10%) from Freedom House's aggregate freedom score.

When a data source is missing for a country, its weight is redistributed proportionally across available sources. Countries show how many of the 4 sources informed their score.

Safest Countries Rankings: Common Questions Answered

โ–ถWhat is the safest country in the world in 2026?
Rankings are based on a composite safety score combining U.S. State Department advisory levels (40%), World Bank governance indicators (25%), traveler impact severity (25%), and Freedom House scores (10%). The #1 country has the highest composite score across all four sources. Check the top of this page for the current leader.
โ–ถHow are country safety rankings calculated?
Each country receives a composite score from 0 to 100 based on four data sources: the U.S. State Department travel advisory level, World Bank Worldwide Governance Indicators for political stability, traveler impact severity scores for crime, terrorism, and kidnapping risk, and Freedom House civil liberties ratings. Higher scores mean safer conditions.
โ–ถWhat is the safest country in Asia?
Safety rankings for Asian countries use the same composite methodology. Countries like Japan, Singapore, and South Korea typically score highest in Asia due to low crime, stable governance, and Level 1 advisory ratings.
โ–ถIs Europe safer than South America?
On average, European countries score higher on composite safety metrics. Most of Western Europe holds Level 1 advisories with high governance scores. South American countries show more variation, with some rated Level 1 and others Level 2-3 due to crime or regional instability.
โ–ถHow often do safety rankings change?
Rankings update every 6 hours based on the latest data from all four sources. Advisory level changes, new governance data releases, and updated severity assessments all affect the composite score. Major events like conflicts or political crises can shift rankings quickly.
